With the recent surge in break-ins in and around our suburbs, i thought maybe its a good time to share some tips to increase the level of security in your home.
No 1
Make sure all external doors are installed with a secondary deadbolt. It is not going to protect your home 100% but it definitely deters the intruder from choosing your home over one with an additional lock installed.
No 2
Related to point number 1, ensure your locks are deadlocked overnight or when no one is home. Many times when i get called out to secure a home after a break in, 70% of the time the deadbolt on the door is not used . Out of convinience , many people choose to only lock the entrance lever or knobset on their front door. These locks if not installed properly, can be easily shimmed open in a matter of minutes compared to traditional deadbolts that protrude around 1 inch into the frame of your door.

Install a security door if you do not have one.
Having a decent security door install deters an intruder and also makes it harder for them to gain entry. As the security door opens outwards, it makes it difficult to kick a door open.
No 4
Install a patio bolt to light sliding glass doors.
Most common sliding doors in residential homes are light and can be easily lifted up due to the huge gap up in the tracks. These can be easily broken into with a pivot device.
By installing a patio bolt to the top or bottom of the door reduces this ability to lift the sliding door.

Safe Guard your windows.
Insert a strip of timber or aluminium in the tracks behind the window. The stops any movement of the opening window.
No 6
Secure your meter box.
Secure your meter box with a power Industry padlock. One tactic used by intruders is to turn your power off and return the following day to see if the power is back on. If its still off, it tells them that no ones home. Also with smart devices gaining popularity, all it takes is to remove power from your router , and all your smart security devices will fail if you do not have a power backup.
